Behavior Consulting
1. Identify Target Behaviors
Based on an assessment, the BCBA will identify specific behaviors to target. These could be problem behaviors (e.g., aggression, non-compliance, self-injury) or skill deficits (e.g., social skills, communication, self-regulation).
2. Develop a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
After assessing the behavior and its function, the BCBA will create a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). This plan outlines the strategies and techniques that will be used to modify the behavior, based on the principles of ABA.
3. Implementation of the Plan
The BCBA may not always be directly involved in implementing the BIP; instead, caregivers, teachers, or other team members are trained on how to follow the plan.BCBAs will provide training and ongoing support to those who are responsible for implementing the plan, ensuring consistency across environments (e.g., home, school, community).
4. Review, Adjust, and Generalize
If necessary, the BCBA will modify the plan, refine interventions, or introduce new strategies based on the individual’s progress or changing needs. Family and team involvement is a critical part of this process. The BCBA ensures that all stakeholders are aware of the progress and any changes made to the plan. The BCBA will also create plans to maintain behavior change over time (i.e., preventing relapse). This often involves fading the intensity of interventions gradually and ensuring ongoing reinforcement in the natural environment.
